We were both in junior high. We reconnected before his untimely death. His books remain a tribute to his creative drive and, to me, a personal connection to those long ago days. Thank you for writing about Bill.Steve Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02044737459507242577noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2089733759263636022.post-50192134629206990422019-09-24T20:20:23.897-04:002019-09-24T20:20:23.897-04:00The Seditionist,

I'm sure it would have been a rewarding experience. I had the good fortune to meet him once in a coffee shop at the Northgate Mall. We talked for hours about comics, our projects, and our personal lives -- and made plans to get together again soon. That year, he was up for an Eisner for his Harvey Kurtzman bio. I followed the awards live and the minute it was announced he won, I emailed him (he was at home, not in San Diego)and he emailed me back with a humble, happy message. I got involved in working on my own book and put off meeting. Having recently finished my book, he was one of the first people I looked up. I sent him an email just a few days ago suggesting we finally get together and hang out more. I also suggested we do a panel at the Emerald City Comic Con together on writing comics history. It would have been my honor to do that with such a talented, hard-working, accomplished writer. I will miss him a great deal. I bought his book on Jim Warren about a month ago and couldn't put it down. When I wrote my own book on comic fandom I sent advance copies out to some of the better known professionals that I thought would be interested. Not surprising there were few responses. That's OK. But Bill Schelly did respond, encouraging me and acknowledging the hard work that went into it. I made a special dedication to him when it was published, "And a tip of the hat to Bill Schelly, whom I have never met, for keeping this part of our history alive."Ronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10026540119640061326noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2089733759263636022.post-35877340358685506892019-09-14T19:08:33.366-04:002019-09-14T19:08:33.366-04:00Great blog.
